For Families
Prepare for Your Child's First Day
Starting at a new childcare service can be both exciting and overwhelming for children and their families. We are here to ensure that your child feels safe and happy on their first day.
What To Expect
When you arrive at our centre on your child’s first day, a friendly member of our team will greet you at the door. They’ll guide you to your child’s room and help both of you settle in. We encourage you to spend a few minutes playing with your child and getting familiar with the room and the other children.
We understand that the first day can be an emotional experience, so our Centre Manager and educators will be available to answer any questions you have. They will also walk you through what your child’s day will look like, so you feel reassured and prepared.
Tips on Saying Farewell
Saying goodbye can be difficult for both parents and children. Here are some tips to make it easier:
- Let your child know that you’re leaving and when you’ll be back. This helps, even with babies.
- Settle your child into a fun and engaging activity before you say goodbye.
- Let your child bring a comfort item from home, such as a teddy or blanket, to help them feel safe.
- When it’s time to go, say goodbye, but try not to prolong the farewell.
- As hard as it may be, try to keep a relaxed and happy expression when leaving.
- Gently encourage your child to separate from you. Positive experiences of separation help build confidence.
It’s completely normal to feel emotional when saying goodbye—both for you and your child! Please know that our educators are here to support you.
What to Bring on Your Child's First Day
To help your child feel comfortable and prepared, here’s what you’ll need to bring:
- Your child’s bag
- A spare set of clothes
- Appropriate footwear for outdoor play or outings
- Weather-appropriate clothing and a sun-safe hat (children will be given the opportunity to go outside in all weather)
- A blanket or sleep sack
- Dummy (if required)
- Water bottle
- Milk bottles (if required)
- Formula (if required)
- A comfort item to help calm them at rest time (optional)
* Please ensure that all of your child’s possessions are clearly labeled to avoid mix-ups.
Messy Play
At our centre, children are encouraged to explore their environment and use their senses through messy play. We ask that you dress your child in clothes that allow them to get a little messy, so they can enjoy activities without worrying about keeping clean. This is a time for your little adventurer to learn through play!
Toilet Training
We are here to support you in making toilet training a positive and confidence-building experience for your child. To assist us, we encourage you to dress your child in clothing that makes it easy for them to use the toilet independently. This includes elastic waist pants and shorts. Please also provide spare underwear and clothing, just in case!
